Volunteer Opportunities

READY TO GET INVOLVED?

At Prairie Five Community Action, our mission is “working together to strengthen the quality of lives in our community”.  We are a local non-profit agency serving residents throughout the counties of Big Stone, Chippewa, Lac qui Parle, Swift, and Yellow Medicine.  Food shelves, thrift stores, meals, and rides are just some of the ways our programs strengthen communities.  We owe the success of these programs to the amazing volunteers who help our neighbors in need connect with resources that improve their lives.

Volunteering is a flexible, convenient, and gratifying way to engage in the community. Prairie Five will help you connect with volunteer opportunities that suit your interests and fit your schedule!

Volunteer opportunities include:

THRIFT STORES:

Volunteering at Prairie Five thrift stores is a great way to get involved in your community, meet new people, and enjoy the flexibility of creating your own schedule. Prairie Five operates thrift stores at each of our satellite offices located in Benson, Canby, Madison, and Ortonville. Volunteers provide customer service, create merchandise displays, organize shelves, sort and price donations.

FOOD SHELVES:

Prairie Five operates seven food shelves located in Appleton, Benson, Canby, Clara City, Graceville, Montevideo, and Ortonville. Volunteers assist clients and help with day-to-day operations including providing customer service, organizing shelves, sorting donations, packing food boxes and unloading Second Harvest trucks.

MEAL SITES:

Prairie Five Meals offers a hot noon meal Monday through Friday for older adults over the age of 60 in a social setting. Volunteers are the foundation to our program as they interact with participants, assist with paperwork, and distribute meals. You can pick your schedule!

MEAL DELIVERY:

Volunteer drivers are the bridge between Prairie Five Meals and the ability for older adults to remain living in their own homes. Volunteers use their own vehicle to deliver meals to homebound individuals. You can pick your schedule! This is a hands on program where you will make a big difference!

HEAD START:

There are many ways to volunteer with Prairie Five Head Start by assisting in classroom activities from art to reading to building and so much more! The time you volunteer in a Head Start classroom is truly appreciated by both staff and students.

RIDES:

Volunteer drivers provide essential transportation that helps their neighbors continue to live independently in their homes. Rides are provided to passengers of all ages seeking reliable rides to medical facilities, essential shopping, and social engagements that connect them with their communities. Volunteer driving allows drivers to determine their own schedules and when/where they are willing to drive while also being reimbursed mileage from the moment they leave their home to the time they return.
