Chippewa County Outreach Office – Main Office

The Chippewa County Outreach office is located at the Prairie Five main office in Montevideo. These offices are located at the Community Services Center at Highway 7 and 6th Street.

The Chippewa County Outreach worker and can assist you with any questions you may have. The Outreach office will make referrals to other agencies, and assist in other ways to solve problems regarding self-sufficiency, energy assistance, housing, and Medicare issues, just to name a few.

The Outreach office offers the Chippewa County Food Shelf in the same building. It is available to Chippewa County residents. Anyone coming to the food shelf must complete an application listing all household members. Call Prairie Five for Food Shelf hours.

Big Stone Outreach Office

The Outreach Office is best known for the Big Stone Lake Area Food Shelf. There are no income guidelines to use this service. A three-day supply of food is given to households in need once per month. Food Shelf hours are Wednesdays from 1:00 – 4:00pm and Thursdays from 9:00am – noon.

Located with the outreach office is a Clothing Room where used clothing is sold at low prices. We accept donations of clean, gently used clothing, household items, and small appliances. Shopping hours are Monday-Friday, 9:00am – 4:00pm.

Energy Assistance applications can be picked up in the office or mailed out. This program is based on income guidelines. There are programs for crisis situations and assistance for utility disconnects. Contact the office if help is needed.

NAPS boxes for seniors are distributed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ortonville on the third Tuesday each month. Call for more information.

There is a trained MNSure Navigator on staff to help with your application on the MNSure website. Call to make an appointment for application assistance.

Loan Closet provides hospital equipment (wheelchairs, shower chairs, walkers, etc.) for rent at reasonable prices. Items can be rented by the month for as long as you need them. Call with questions.

The Outreach Office can help with self-sufficiency issues, Head Start, Weatherization and referrals to other agencies. To apply for any Prairie Five programs or for assistance in contacting other agencies, call the Big Stone County Outreach Office. If we can’t help you, we may be able to find someone who can!

Outreach Office & Madison Clothing Room

The Outreach office is an advocate to provide general information and referrals for services and specific agencies provided by Prairie Five.

Services include:   
Energy assistance to supplement heat and electrical costs during the heating season, including help in a crisis of heating repair or replacement. Housing rehabilitation programs; assistance with property tax and rent refunds. Budgeting and self-sufficiency assistance. MNSure Navigator assistance. Referrals and recommendations to Prairie Five Senior Nutrition programs such as area meal sites, NAPS; Head Start/Early Head Start program; 
SNAP; weatherization; Prairie Five Rides transportation services.

Lac Qui Parle Clothing Center, open Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Donations of clean items sold at low cost include:

  • Men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing
  • Shoes
  • Toys
  • Housewares, small household appliances and furniture

Swift County Outreach Office

Clothing Room: Donated clothing, shoes, purses, household, home décor small appliances and small furniture for sale at very good prices. Please feel free to donate your items.  Donation hours are 8:00 – 4:30 Monday – Friday at Prairie Five in Benson. 

Woven Rugs: We make and sell rugs in different lengths and colors. We take special orders if we don’t have the size you want or the colors you want.  

Food Shelf: County-wide, no income guildlines for this service. A three-day supply of food is given per visit.  Food Shelf hours are 9-12:00 and 1:30-4:00 Monday – Friday at Prairie Five in Benson.

Fuel assistance: Income guideline program. Appointments taken in Benson, Appleton and other towns in the county. Also Mail-Out apps are sent out to customers. We also have crisis programs and assistance for shut-offs.  Please call if you think we can help you at (320) 842-8565.
